Heart Smart Program

Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital

Our Heart Smart Program (Cardiac Rehabilitation) is designed for people following a heart attack, heart surgery, anyone with angina, heart disease, heart failure and those at risk.

Developed and run by a group of local health professionals, it aims to:

  • Have you feeling confident to resume a full and active life.
  • Prevent the incidence or occurrence of heart problems.
  • Promote self-care to enable you to manage your own health

It Involves:

  • Assessment and follow-up of individual patient risk factors.
  • Individualised programs, goal setting and ongoing referrals.
  • Education and exercise sessions run twice weekly over 4 weeks (see below).
  • Telehealth and correspondence contact available.

Exercise Sessions

The exercise component highlights the benefits of regular exercise to improve general fitness and increases tolerance to daily activities. Each session is closely supervised.

Education / Information Sessions

  • Session 1 “Your Heart – What makes it tick?”

    Speaker Nurse

    An introduction to the program, including explanation of heart disease, heart attacks angina and associated risk factors.

  • Session 2 “What test is that?”

    Speaker Physician – Dr. Henshaw


    Discussion of various investigations and procedures. This is your opportunity to ask questions.

  • Session 3 “Let’s get physical”

    Speaker Physiotherapist

    Includes the benefits of exercise, what exercise is appropriate and separates myths form facts concerning physical activity.

  • Session 4 “Food glorious food”

    Speaker Dietician

    Diet for a healthy heart. Includes ways to improve eating, cooking and purchasing habits.

  • Session 5 “Keep the pressure down”

    Speaker Physician – Dr. Henshaw

    Explains blood pressure and the need for control.

  • Session 6 “Stress and relaxation”

    Speaker CentreCare

    Identify the signs of stress, what causes stress and ways to manage it.

  • Session 7 “Tugging at your heart strings”

    Speaker CentreCare

    Some of the social and emotional issues facing heart patients and partners.

Time and Venue

The program is conducted over four weeks on Wednesdays and Fridays at Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital.

The program includes an:

Exercise Session 1pm – 2pm
&
Education Session 2pm – 3pm

Stroke Group

Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital

Our six week Out Patient Stroke Group Program is run by the Physiotherapist based on the Restorative Care Ward at Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital.

Each session consists of:

  • An Exercise
  • A component of a Daily Living Activity
  • A Discussion Topic.

The aim of the group is:

  • To bridge the gap between individual therapy and discharge.
  • To provide peer support
  • To maintain / improve clients functional ability.
